We were supposed to be in France in early October to shoot a friend's wedding however someone had to break their leg. KLM airlines generously gave us a year to use the tickets but since we are expecting a new baby in the spring it seemed like November was the right time. It was pretty much wandering around the old towns taking photos of Ethan.

I had a tree land on my back and break my leg whilst clearing new trails at Wildhorse Catskiing this Fall. A little unfortunate but fortunately it's all getting better and it was not worse. I was laid up for about a month and then moving around on crutches. It's all healing well. No pictures.

I got two paragliding flights from Idaho Peak this summer. The road was closed due to snow until early August. Quality over quantity. Nice to keep my head in the game.

Getting a lot of yardwork done this spring. The snowpack is still deep in the mountains, even been getting a few fresh dustings of snow up high. It's been cool and wet in the Kootenay valleys. Of course, Ethan is a big help for the big jobs.

It's been a lot of heavy equipment in the yard at Glacier View Cabins in New Denver. We have torn down trees, moved the parking lot closer to the street and laid down concrete sidewalks, topsoil for a large lawn and next will be fences to keep the little boy contained....

After a long winter away it has been good to see my little man. Ethan is now 18 months old. We had his 1st birthday and a month later I was away for the most of the next 4 months. Sometimes it was just an afternoon at the swimming pool once every two weeks and we did have a month away in February-March. We are both happier together.

We had a bluebird day, creamy powder with perfect stability for the last day of catskiing for this winter. After skiing Wildhorse Peak we traversed into this bowl to keep skiing. Ethan was out waving the flag when the Olympic torch came through the West Kootenay. The torch came through Creston, Salmo - and Ymir - before ending in Nelson for the evening. Lots of snow created great early season conditions at Wildhorse Catskiing. We have put in lots of days of great skiing for a lot of returning skiers and snowboarders. We miss having Sara taking photographs and tailguiding. For the alternative Ethan seems to be enjoying his time with Sara.

Ethan has started to use his legs and arms in exercises, sometimes to useful purposes like rolling over. Face muscles are being used for crying and smiling. Flying back from Ventura, CA we had a perfect view of Yosemite Valley from 30k ft. On your lower left is the famous prow of El Capitan. Yosemite Falls just out of view on the same side of the valley, followed by the expanse of granite slabs of Royal Arches and then Washington Column. The weather is still beautiful here in New Denver. We attended the Garlic Festival in the ballpark today and took advantage of the weather to snap a few pictures of Sara. This a pretty famous cycling trail around this area and around the world. I got a chance the other day to cycle 60km of the trail - all downhill. We cycled over trestle bridges spanning huge gullies, through tunnels 1km long and lots of beautiful mountain and lake scenes.

I spun youtube around a little looking at other paragliding stuff and here is another trick that we did at Mara Lake. This is a spiral dive - so the paraglider is taken from straight and level flight to tight 360 and then tighter and the wing is actually in a flight path down towards to ground. The technique is sometimes used to get out of unwanted strong lift. The g-forces are pretty intense.

I have not taken many pictures this spring so no blogging. Winter has been over for a long time. I spent quite a bit of time working up in the Wildhorse cleaning up but have been back in New Denver for all of the good spring weather. I'm not a big cliff hucker but I like to ski all kinds of terrain. I love the feeling of carving through soft cream cheese powder and hitting perfect rock pillows and the turns becoming effortless. It is awesome to see some of our guests at Wildhorse hurling themselves off the cliffs and sometimes crashing spectacularly. I need to ski tomorrow and the next day, and the day after that. The winter was a little late in coming and our first day of catskiing was New Years Day 2009. When in France we always stay at the Chateau Rainford. This picture is not it, although Avignon is under an hour away from the tiny little village of St. Romain en Viennois where Sara's parents have a small and rustic place. We explore the little village markets, historical places, vineyards and the mountain roads like Mt Ventoux which is one of the classic climbs of the Tour de France.

When in Switzerland visit Grindelwald. I remember reading The White Spider and a host of the other early mountaineering books about climbing the North Face of the Eiger. Sara and I spent a day hiking the Cinqua Terra coastline of Italy. Needless to say it was incredible. We were quite surprised by the number of people hiking. What a contrast from hiking in the backcountry of British Columbia. The train stops in every town along the coast so you just keep hiking and easting and drinking and sleeping and photographing.

In the Fall my parents met Sara and I in Italy for a car tour of Southern Europe. We spent two weeks travelling through Italy, Switzerland and Provence, France. On October 17th Sara and I went to Banff for the opening of the Whyte Museum's Out There: Adventure Photography Exhibition. Four of Sara's photos were chosen to be exhibited. We had a great September with some beautiful days. I finally managed to make the most of it with a short flight from Idaho Peak in very quiet conditions. Red Mountain sponsered the 2nd Annual Seven Summits Running Race. There was about 80 runners climbing up 2 or 3,000 ft and the 26 km trail. I took my bike up and took photos from the high spots of the runners as they passed by Old Glory Mountain at the mid point in the race. My sister, Cynthia had the good fortune to marry Peter and have three awesome kids together. In addition to being a great father Peter is a teacher in Bendigo, a heck of a good golfer, kicks ass at "Call of Duty" video game, and gives his wife a run for the money at who's the boss in the kitchen. For the last two weeks I took an airplane with my Aunt Rosemary to see an Eye Specialist in Australia and to visit my family. It's been awhile. I met Catherine, my brother's wife who both live in Melbourne. We walked all over town enjoying the winter weather, good chinese food and the various architecture and street art of Melbourne. Things have changed in the last 20 years.

The Idaho Peak bike ascent from New Denver was my goal for last summer. I ended up doing it a couple of times and look forward to doing all of the trails again this summer. We rented a car - no, not this one - and visited Trinidad on the southern side of Cuba. Lots of adventure driving on the local roads. The classic car is a 58 Chev. I think it's the newest of the old american cars to get down here since the American - Cuba standoff. The revolution is still popularized with postcards and t-shirts of Che Guevera and Fidel Castro at every tourist station.

Lots of History in Havana. Old buildings which look unchanged and still a busy port. This photo is taken of an artist's rendition of the port of Havana in the 1600 or 1700's. It was pretty neat to be in The City of the Caribean.

Sara just loves to go on guided day tours ( just like tailguiding at Wildhorse ) and taking photos. We spent two days in Havana which was very cool, stayed on the 24th floor of the old Havana Hilton, went to the Tropicana for the show and saw all the sights.

We got up early a couple of days when the sea was calm and walked right down to the beach put on snorkel equipment and swam with the fishes and the coral reef. I think we had the fish for dinner too.

Sara and I zipped down to Cuba for two weeks for fun in the sun. Sara surfed the internet for a last minute deal at an all-inclusive resort at Jibacoa. You can see the resort in the background of this photo. Quite a different scene from last spring when I was on a 2 week ski tour through the BC Interior....

I walked up Wildhorse Peak once in December when road building preparing for the season just to get away from the sound of machinery. Chris, Gordon and I walked up yesterday to ski the south face. Beautiful knee deep powder through 2,400 vertical feet. Sunny skies and -12C. Only skied this one once before. We skied a few other lines and then came up to this point and skied back down to the valley

Sara and I skied at Whitewater on the groomers for Christmas Day. Skied three exploratory runs at Wildhorse and then the 29th and 30th of December in epic powder conditions. OK. So, I've been out chainsawing new roads, driving deisel up to Wildhorse Pass, tradeshows, invoicing, emailing and on the phone. Most of September and October has been raining and snowing. Managed to fly out the toilet barrels from the Yurts and cleaned them out. Loads of fun that one. Otherwise been working on extending the snowcat trails higher and further. I've hiked into Qua Yurt a couple of times working on replacing the roof and adding a deck. After getting the inside scoop at the Bar we took a tour of the mine site. Lots of guys getting the job done. It appears that they will be ready for production in the fall. The tailings pond is nearing completion and they have moly on the ground ready for processing.

We had to make a little side trip up to Trout Lake to check out a hot stock tip. We dropped into the Windsor Hotel to get a little inside information. We found the Roca Mines office next door after testing the local beverage and listening into the hot gossip in the bar. Lots of people working up at the mine site and they are gearing up for production in the fall.

I first visited the Incomappleux valley fifteen years ago doing some exploring for ice climbing. The canyon has been paddled once for sure and looks like mostly class III with a short section of class IV. The upper and lower river seem to be nice class II with some sweepers and cold water. I thought that this would be one of the ultimate mountain bike rides and I was not dissappointed. I started riding at 6am from New Denver climbing to Sandon by 7am on the roads and then started up the Idaho Peak Road. Once again it took me about 1hr 45 minutes for the climb to parking lot. I did continue up to the peak and then walked down the north ridge to protect the fragile alpine environment

One of my goals this summer was to pedal my bike up to Idaho Peak. From New Denver it is a 5,500 ft ( approx ) climb over about 25 km. Grace is 9 and Will is 7 and they are my niece and nephew. I had never met them until the other week when they came up to visit Sara and I with their Dad, Ian. They are awesome. We spent some time at Slocan Lake and just generally hanging out. A little golf at the slocan lake golf course and horseriding and hiking around to different beaches. I just got word from David Hibbard of Nahanni Wild that our guide from last summer, Adam Burrell will be canoeing the Nahanni from Moose Ponds to Virginia Falls this summer including the hike to the Cirque of the Unclimbables. We could hear the 212 helicopters from Adamant Lodge pounding the sky above us as we approached the Centurion Col. Instead of climbing up Bachelor Pass as indicated in Chic famous book "Summits and Icefields" we ascended the drainage further east and gained the pass directly. Nice route. Stewart has done one of these big traverses every winter for the last couple of years. Andrew joined him on the Rogers Pass to Bugaboos last winter for a slog fest. From the Great Cairn Hut at Sir Sandford we ascended the Silvertip Glacier and traversed right on a nice bench towards Azimuth Notch. When the traverse starting to look really hairy we climbed directly up about 100m on steep snow slopes to gain the ridge about 150m before the Azimuth Notch.
